Dear Foodie Fam,

Milky, Rummy, Fruity…

I love raspberries. For my birthday for the past nine years, I’ve always ordered the Raspberry diva at Rick’s Diner.

Who knew I was tasting what the heart of the Milk Way tastes like!

How we Know the Milky Way’s Taste

About 400 light-years (58 quadrillion miles) away from us is Sagittarius B, the dust cloud at the center of the galaxy… The 30m IRAM telescope in Spain has been studying this dust cloud. It’s picked up thousands of signals from Sagittarius B. What the astronomers are hoping to find are amino acids, which could indicate possible life on other planets that originated from those amino acids.

Well, the astronomers found 32 compounds in Sagittarius B. No amino acids, yet. But... so far, they’ve made a very tasty discovery: There’s ethyl formate (C3H6O2) in Sagittarius B. They gave away their presence because they've been absorbing the radiation from the stars and re-radiate it at radio wavelengths.

Ethanol Tastes like…

Why is this interesting? Ethanol is the most popularly known smell molecule (aroma compounds).

In terms of smell, astronauts say space smells like a funny sulfurous odor. It’s been described as meaty, metallic and even reminiscent of welding fumes.  Well! Ethanol smells much different than all that.

Ethanol is the smell of rum, cognac, whiskey smells.

Well… isn’t taste part smell? Yes! And scientists say that the presence of ethanol makes Sagittarius B taste like RASPBERRIES.

There you go!: Sagittarius B smells like an alcoholic drink and tastes like raspberry… The galaxy is milky, rummy and fruity!

Note: Omg, foodie fam! No lie: recently, my body hasn’t enjoyed adult drinks as much as it has in the past. One wild weekend, Dutch asked what drink I wanted to drink. I thought long and hard because he wanted me to pick a hard alcohol (I prefer wine, lately). I came up with the old, reliably easy Raspberry Smirnoff.

Could that mean I’m drinking Sagittarius B?
