Welcome to my “Dear Foodie Fam" blog! I'm Dixie! My love language is food and I like to share it with my hubby, my family and friends new and old! Can't wait to share my voyages with you, too!
It was 2003 when I realized my gusto for food was unique.
I was chomping down my In-N-Out burger on my first date with my would-be-husband, Dutch. He pointed out how much I seemed to love eating!
Immediately, I wondered if I should’ve played more coy. Just as quickly as that thought dashed through my mind, I tossed it aside. Duh, I enjoy food! And if he was cool with that, he was husband material.
A stick-thin child, I preferred reading or drawing than eating. Food wasn’t a big deal until I entered middle school. Every Sunday and every grocery visit began to shape my palate and my ideas of the world around me.
My father raised my brother and I in the California Bay Area food world. Taking us out to eat on Sundays was a way for him to show he loved us. A respect for food as nourishment, bond and artistic experience was cultivated in me at every family dinner, at every treat out at a local haunt and at every celebration for every great accomplishment.
Today, my husband Dutch “feeds" my passion for melty, cheesy, crunchy, savory, luscious and sinfully delicious food. As much as I like to eat, he loves to feed me (happy wife = happy life?) and take tons of photos of me (he is a photographer). My appetite for food is matched by my passion to nerd out… to research and write about questions I have about food as a vehicle for culture, history and art.
As an artist, I am most attracted to art that unites the viewer to the overall human experience. I believe food is the only form of art, history and culture basic to survival and that truly intrigues me. Crafting, offering and sharing food is a uniquely human practice, which is why I have so much passion for food.
Through this blog, I've met foodies all over the world. When I meet foodies in person, it's funny to think we like to sit around and shove food in our faces. What a vulnerable, revealing thing to do with people I just met! What an ancient practice of bonding. It's impressive how sharing a meal with people just exposes us all as hungry creatures, at the end of it all. I adore how food literally brings love of all kinds to the table!
This is a log of my food stories. I hope it can bring us together, too.
Today, I am a Sacramento food blogger, foodoirist and content creator who loves sharing food stories from Northern California and around the world.
I never predicted I’d be a food blogger… but it doesn’t surprise me. I’ve been a blog subscription hoarder since 2005 when my blog roll of 300+ bloggers was a weekly digest for me.
After my education in graphic design and years in the advertising/creative world, I started a freelance creative business in 2015. Meaning to expand my creative skill arsenal, I decided to try my hand at social media marketing. That experiment became a passion project. My “Dear Foodie Fam” blog was born in the fall of 2017.
I don’t see myself as a critic or photographer and I’m definitely not a chef or scholar. I’m just an eater who quickly found a hunger in the Sacramento community for the pairing of two things: the power of storytelling and the power of food.
I invest hours of genuine engagement and relationship-building to maintain my foodie family. Because time and social energy is precious to me, I seek relationships rather than followers. It takes me an average of four hours to prepare a single quality static posts, at least eight hours to create eight minute videos and a week to write a blog post in my unique style.
Given the time and thought I invest in blogging, I do not accept complimentary products offered in trade for guaranteed exposure to my foodie fam. I post with all honesty about my foodie stories and I endorse only businesses I already truly enjoy.
For businesses I am not familiar with, I offer packages while holding to the value of my unique creative service and voice. I only operate with complete honesty of my opinions.
