TOURING SANTORINI: Red Beach
Red: Dutch's favorite color. He wore it a lot- especially Nautica. His walls were red, in high school. I wore red for him at senior prom and around my neck at our wedding. He even talks red, I think. Get him to talk about anything he's passionate about and he'll burn red for hours.
My sister-in-law says it makes his favorite color is red because she thinks we are both "fire" personalities (Taoist-wise)... exhibiting love, passion, leadership, spirituality, insight, dynamism, aggression, intuition, reason, and expressiveness. We're direct. We succeed by generosity. We're healed by compassion, fun and joy.
The Red Beach really lived up to it's name for me.
We rented a car for a day to explore Santorini. The size of Santorini makes this totally feasible. The Red Beach is out near Ancient Akrotiri- about 20 minutes from Fira by car.
There is no paved path down to the shoreline from the parking lot. In fact, the way down is a bit hard to navigate if you aren't wearing proper shoes as it's pebbly and at times steep and narrow.
The shoreline is short and if we had gone at any other time, I'm sure it would have been loaded. However, we didn't have many people to share the beach with, at all.
We couldn't resist taking a dip although the breeze was brisk. The waves took us in immediately! They were warm pretty foreful! When they broke hard, our legs pulled across some craggy surfaces.
We couldn't help but feel like the Red Sea had some strange strength. The sight of the towering, jagged, dark rock against the champagne-gold sunset was intimidatingly gorgeous. It was a fiery view.
We actually lost some jewelry in the few minutes we were in the Red Sea! It was almost like the ancient site had levied a toll on us and it made us feel so small and in awe.
Bay Area girl, here: my feet have sank time and again down hills of soft sand descending into cold water. This isn't that. Yet, you don't travel across the world for what you know. You travel to be put through the fire.
